It is one of the smallest lake with 13.5km length. It is located in Piedmont whose outlet river is the Nigoglia. The river runs northwards to the Alps.
The main attractions are the town of Orta San Giulio and the island of San Giulio.
Pettenasca, Armeno, Gozzano and Vacciago are the villages surrounding the Lake Orta. In Vacciago there is a 17th century villa which was the home of the artist Antonio Calderara who lived between 1903 and 1978. It contains his collections. The villa is open for visitors between 10am and 12pm and from 15:00 to 18:00 everyday except Mondays from May to October.
Omegna: It is an industrial town located on Orta Lake. On Thursdays there is a market.
Orta San Giulio: The piazza Morta in the town has cafés and bars. There is a town hall, Palazzo della Communitŕ which dates back to 1582.
In the town there is the tower of Villa Crespi which belongs to a newspaper owner. He employed Turkish stonemasons therefore on the tower of the villa there are some prayers from the Koran. The villa is a hotel today.
The 15th century church in the town is called the Church of Madonna del Sasso, is located next to a steep lane leading to Sacro Monte. It is a sacred hill with 21 chapels dedicated to St Francis of Assisi.
Isola San Giulio: There are boats from Piazza Morta every 15 minutes to Isola San Giulio. On the island there is the basilica which is open between 09:30am and 12:00pm and from 14:00 to 18:45. It was built in the 9th century however much of the ruins we see are from 11th century as it was rebuilt during then.
