It was built by the order of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria by Giuseppe Piermarini and opened in 1778.
Unfortunately Teatro Ducale was destroyed by fire two and a half years after it was opened and then the construction was financed by the box-holders of the Teatro Ducale. It was built on the land where the church of Santa Maria alla Scala is located. The name of the theatre comes from Santa Maria alla Scala.
The theatre suffered economic crisis in 1897 and had to be closed for a year.
It was damaged by the bombings during the World War II, rebuilt and re-opened in 1946 with a concert directed by Arturo Toscanini.
The season of the theatre begins on 7th December at the feast of Milan's beloved patron saint Sant'Ambrogio.
