Milan was founded by the Insubres Gauls in the 4th century BC. The ancient name of Milan was Mediolanum which according to some sources means “city between two rivers” and ccording to some sources means “city at the centre of the plain”.
At the beginning it was a very small settlement but with the Rome conquest in 222 BC it started to grow very rapidly.
An old saying Milan l’č Milan – Milan is just Milan refers to the city’s uniqueness, its hidden beauties and the contrasts beneath.
